Architectural Design Coordinator
Mill Valley, California · Full Time · Exempt

On-site in our Mill Valley office, Monday–Friday. Local candidates only. No recruiters.

About the Role
Van Acker Construction is seeking an Architectural Design Coordinator (DC) experienced in high-end residential design and construction. The DC bridges the design team and the site construction team. They report to the Project Manager and Site Superintendent and work closely with the architect and design consultants to resolve design intent for efficient construction and to manage change as it arises.

This is a hands-on role without dedicated support staff. The Architectural Design Coordinator both manages the coordination process and creates and maintains the project documentation: current and as-built drawings, permits, and related materials. Strong construction administration (CA) detail development and documentation skills are essential to this role.

We anticipate this position starting in January 2027.

Responsibilities
  • Manage multiple VAC-contracted design and engineering consultants so their documents integrate with the client’s architect’s design and the full project scope
  • Create and manage construction documentation, including scopes of work, proposals, submittals, and RFIs
  • Communicate design changes to field management and subcontractors
  • Reduce cost and schedule uncertainty so projects finish on time and within budget
  • Provide the liaison work, documentation, systems upkeep, and schedule direction that keep projects running smoothly
  • Ensure deliverables are construction-ready and meet VAC’s standards for quality, fit and finish, and cost
  • Time split: approximately 70% project documentation and coordination, 30% technical problem-solving and solution development

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or Engineering; Construction Management considered with substantial architectural design coordination experience
  • 10–15 years in residential design coordination with an established architecture or design-build firm
  • Strong command of construction administration (CA) detail development and documentation, including submittals and RFIs. This is central to the role
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, Excel (intermediate or advanced), Google Docs, Autodesk Build, Adobe Acrobat, Bluebeam Revu, Box, and Dropbox; Photoshop a plus
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented: a thorough note-taker who anticipates the project’s changing needs and meets deadlines
  • Self-directed and committed to the success of the project, team, and company, with a drive to keep learning
  • Professional and adaptable with architects, designers, subcontractors, consultants, craftspeople, and coworkers of diverse working styles
  • Lives in the local area and eligible to work in the U.S.
  • Interviewees will be asked to share a CD set they developed or worked on, along with a portfolio

Compensation & Benefits
$140,000–$170,000 base salary, plus an annual discretionary bonus. Final compensation depends on experience, education, and skills.

Benefits include group medical, dental, and vision coverage, PTO, paid holidays, and a 401(k) with company contribution.

Overtime may be required during certain project phases. Occasional jobsite travel is required, and the candidate must meet the company’s driving requirements.
